Dreams Become Reality

What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? ~ Langston Hughes.

Did you know that more than 16 million children, or roughly one in five, were living in poverty in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s official poverty measure. That is higher than any other age group.

The longer a child lives in poverty, the tougher it can be for them to climb out later in life. According to an analysis by Columbia University’s National Center for Children in Poverty, 45 percent of people who spent at least half of their childhood in poverty were poor at age 35. Among those who spent less than half of their childhood in poverty, just 8 percent were poor at age 35.

The nation’s poorest kids primarily live in households headed by a single female, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Nearly half of all children with a single mother — 47.6 percent — live in poverty.

It was a sweltering hot day in Arizona when four men: Les Richards (Co-Founder), Demetrus Johnson (Director), Brandon Macon (Treasuer) and Darrell Reid (Co-Founder); all from different cities but having similar backgrounds, sat down at the round table to flush out a common burning desire inside each of them to help others, especially the youth. Each of them had come from tough beginnings and/or broken homes. Each of them felt blessed to have been able to make it out of their situations, with the help of many others in their family or community.
.
As the four men, looked over those staggering statistics and observed their former communities, they knew hundreds of thousands of youth were going through their childhood with big dreams and sadly for many of them, those big dreams would never become reality.
.
Why will these children's dreams not come to fruition? It wasn't because of lack of effort, lack of will, lack of drive, lack of passion. More or less it was because of growing up in the wrong environment which created a lack of guidance, a lack of hope, a lack of opportunity, a lack of resources, a lack of structure, a lack of assistance and a lack of knowledge.  After examining these factors they set out to eliminate all factors that were outside of a child's control.
.
What they developed that day in Arizona, was a way to make Dreams Become Reality! So what exactly is Dreams Become Reality (hereinafter referred to as DBR)?
.
DBR is an outreach, transitional program for underprivileged youth that will be housed first in the Phoenix Arizona area, with hopes of expanding across the United States.  The goal is to create sustainability by developing youth mentally, spiritually and emotionally giving them a chance to live out their dreams and grow into highly productive adults. DBR hopes not only to change the lives of the youth, but their families and communities as well, allowing these youth future opportunities to give back to their communities.
.
The opening poem, A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes perfectly describes the thought process behind creating DBR. How will they do it?  With your help!!! Donate Today!
