Harvey Relief- Help Me Get to Texas

Donation protected
This summer, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas and devastated the Houston area. The immediate crisis response is over, but many Texas families have been left with their homes destroyed, putting the pieces back together on their own.
Like most Americans, it hurt to see a thriving city like Houston and its surroundings wiped out seemingly overnight. I had just adopted my sweet cat Henry, and the thought of losing him and all my earthly possessions was heartbreaking. I wanted to help. And when I found out about All Hands Volunteers and their two-year commitment to help Texans rebuild, I jumped at the chance to help.

My application to join All Hands in the Houston area has been approved! I'll be flying out on Saturday, December 16th and returning Saturday, December 23rd. In that time I will be sleeping on a church floor at the All Hands communal base in Richmond, TX, spending my days cleaning out homes too damaged to repair and helping families get ready to rebuild. It's unglamorous, messy, incredibly rewarding work that I'm eager to do. But I need your help.

While All Hands does take care of shelter, work equipment and three meals a day, I am still reponsible for the cost of travel and personal supplies (my sleeping bag and mattress pad, work clothes, etc.). That's where this fundraiser comes in. I'm prepared to cover 100% of these costs, but frankly, this is a lot of money for a college student to shell out. I'm asking humbly for your help to defray the cost of getting me to Texas. Here's exactly how I plan to use any money given here:

- The round trip flight from Seattle to Houston is roughly $486. I have been tracking the price of this flight and will purchase as soon as it drops- it's been changing by the day- no later than 10/10, since All Hands needs to confirm my travel itinerary to reserve my spot.
- The distance from the airport in Houston to the All Hands base is about an hour drive. I'll be taking an Uber or Lyft per AHV's recommendation (whichever is cheapest), and they project this cost to be anywhere from $40-$80. Planning for the worst case scenario, I'm asking for a total of $160 to cover this cost.
- Every penny raised in excess of what I spend to cover travel will be donated directly to All Hands to fund their efforts in Texas, Florida, The US Virgin Islands, and other places impacted by recent natural disasters.

I will be posting updates and receipts here. To learn more about the work All Hands does, visit hands.org. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any donation you can spare to help me make this trip happen. Thank you!
