Spiritualized is a film about a day in the life of the most creative man in San Diego, Real J. Wallace. The film is a non-scripted call to the human spirit reminding the day to day person that they are infinite beings beyond the containment of the flesh. Filmmaker Benjamin Huerta beautifully captures the feeling of infinity in his first of many solo projects.
Beginning in Barrio Logan, Real J contemplates the social engineering of his city as he visit's Coronado and Downtown (DTSD). As a black man in Barrio Logan, his culture has already been gentrified and pushed into South East San Diego. Empathy and spirituality are tools that he uses to relate to the community of Barrio Logan which is in the mist of gentrification in 2017. He fights against this by empowering as many soldiers as possible through the arts and demands that his culture is viewed as contemporary. He alludes to a deeper meaning of gentrification than normally applied.
"Not just land has been gentrified there is the gentrification of abilities, gentrification of fine art, gentrification of the mind, gentrification of swimming."
His journey leads him to the conclusion that he must learn to love his oppressor by first learning to love himself and the people around him. The most successful way Real J. has learned to do this is through the arts, which have allowed him and others to realize that they have the power of alchemy and the ability to speak themselves into existence.
Music by Real J Wallace & DNYKAY from the album "American Boy," set to release in 2018.
