George's Emergency Medical Care

Donation protected
George (a girl) is an active, friendly, labradoodle with a weakness for tennis balls. She brings joy to everyone who meets her. When we're not at home she can often be found 'gramming on the sly. You can find pics of her here: https://www.instagram.com/girlnamedgeorge/

Why George needs your help

This Monday morning at 4am, George started vomiting.  In the past she has gotten sick from eating something she picks up when we aren't looking, so we weren't alarmed. We made sure to give her some water and kept an eye on her. The next morning, I stayed home from work to continue monitoring her. But after watching her for a few hours, we didn't see improvement. She was lethargic, had no appetite, and stayed in bed all day. During her walk, the dark maroon urine was so startling to us that we rushed her to the Emergency Vet. Coincidentally, she had started a new meal delivery service for dogs about 10 days before, and we thought it was perhaps an allergic reaction to her new diet.

Sadly, that is not the case. As of now, George has been diagnosed with IMHA - an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks your red blood cells.

When we first brought George into the vet, her red blood cell (RBC) count was a scary 12, when it should been between 35 - 45, meaning her organs were not getting adequate oxygen. We moved fast and decided to give her a blood transfusion, as the doctor said she would probably not survive the night without it. After her first blood transfusion, she was still in critical condition - but stable - at a RBC count of about 22.

We need your help to continue George's treatment and path to recovery! The funds will be used to continue her treatment, and give her the best chance to recover and return home.

George was not expected to survive without the transfusion, but after her first transfusion, her odds have gone up and she is still hanging on.  She is on round-the-clock intensive care, on fluids and IVs, and has already had several bouts of bloodwork and testing, radiographs, and ultrasound. The ultrasound has revealed pancreatitis.

We are currently giving her blood thinners, and working to stabilize her RBC count before discussing further options. The rising costs of continued emergency animal care necessitated help in order to provide George with critical essentials in order to pull through.

Thank you for all the love and support we've received for George from our friends, family - and followers on instagram! Even if we haven't met in person yet, we thank you for your love and support. George's family, her best friend (piglet - see below), and her friends want her back home, safe and on the path to recovery.

Needless to say, we love her. She is the first dog that we adopted as a couple, and has been by our side through thick and thin - from grad school to our move out west and today. As a kid, we were never allowed to have dogs because our mom had been traumatized by one in her childhood (an unfortunate attack), and because we lived in apartments that didn't allow them. But George is so loyal and loving. I can honestly say that we are all better people for having learned these lessons in loyalty and love from animals. What did we ever do to deserve our dogs?  We are grateful for every day and moment with George. We'll leave you with this video of George enjoying the snow here : https://bit.ly/2m7aChX
