Beauty rule number 10: French braids are always cool. But there are ways to make them even cooler, and it involves chalk.

We teamed up with hair and makeup artist Dani Levi for a special project: teaching a beauty novice, Lucy McKown, how to create rainbow French braids with chalk. This wasn't to torture McKown; it was to prove just how easy it is to execute these rainbow braids that are perfect for the remainder of festival season. In the video, Levi and McKown sit down with a sheet divider between them and nothing but a mirror, chalk, styling products, tools, and elastics at their disposal.

Levi then gives McKown verbal instructions. The biggest lesson Levi teaches McKown: "Chalking is really messy." It may be, but the instructions are easy and fun. The process involves brushing out your hair, dampening it so the chalk will stick, and then drawing chalk in different colors on different strands of hair. Next, take some wax (Levi uses R + Co Glossing Wax) and scrunch it into your hair so the colors stay in place. Oh, and are you one of many who find French-braiding one of the most difficult things to accomplish? McKown tells Levi in the video that she's going to have to "walk her through" the whole French-braiding part. All the better for us because even if you know how to French-braid like a pro, you can always use a refresher.
