For every one of my siblings birthdays I offer them a gift or an "experience" like going to the zoo or the aquarium.
This year for Brytons 12th birthday I told him that I could re-do his room with him, he liked that idea a lot. He had been living in my old room for about a whole year (which was white, gold, and pink), and wow did that room need a makeover! When I moved in it had yellow walls and very scratched up black concrete floors. It used to be an in home salon... I would be horrified if I walked into this room to get my hair done tbh. Anyway, Mike and I painted the walls white, the floors grey, and the window pane/closet pink. I loved it at the time! So to work on Brytons room I had to get a sense of what kind of kid he is. Yes, we're siblings but between our age gap and me living on my own for 2 years, I had to get to know him again. He gave me NOTHING to work with. The only thing he said was that he likes art. I came up with designs for his room, got his approval, and got to work. The color scheme was navy blue, light blue, orange, and grey. I knew that I wanted to do a dark blue half wall thing around the whole room to make it a little dark (and he loves BYU), I for sure wanted to do something crazy on his longest wall, and I wanted to add a lot of fun elements AND creative elements. When you walk into the room his closet is immediately to the left, it has good space/storage but it was bright pink. He chose the light blue color for his closet and I loved it! Mike took our the closet pieces and then I painted it blue. I tried keeping it simple and not too cluttered, I organized his shirts by short sleeve, long sleeve, and jackets/hoodies. In the cubby slots I put his books and some toys in there and what you see down below is literally all of his toys and books so I made them all accessible. And above his closet I put a mini basketball hoop! This was one of my favorite parts. It is really close to the ceiling but it was basically the only option haha. Right by his closet is "half" of a wall. When the room was a salon the sink was right there... it was never plastered correctly but Bryton didn't seem to care. Above the navy blue is *drum roll please* chalkboard paint! I wanted him to have an area on the wall where he could play some games with his friends or just write down ideas! The next wall was the longest wall in his room. It was just a huge blank wall and to be honest I had no idea what to do with it at the beginning. After we got the navy blue painted on there I decided that I wanted the whole wall to be a desk area! I showed Bryton the triangle design (without telling him about the desk) and he loved it. So we taped and I painted the shapes blue, orange, and grey. Mike cut the wood pieces to fit (which were $5 each) and we put them up with L-brackets. I had just bought 3 stools for my own place but they ended up being too tall for what I wanted... but they fit perfectly with the desk! The hooks above the desk were $1 each from the Dollar Tree, and I thought they made such a cute touch. The next wall has the only window in the room! We painted the window to match the closet and we hung up his bulletin board centered between the window and the next wall over. I offered to throw out the bulletin board because it was pretty beat up, but he really wanted to keep it. I'm really glad we kept it! We decided that his bed would be going in this corner from the start. It just made more sense to have his bed over there and I fit so well under the bulletin board and everything. His nightstand obviously was placed right by his bed. Because he has a pull out bed I decided to only put his pants in the bottom drawer and some random things like his journal and "basketball" in the top drawer so it would be easy to move if he had a sleepover or something. The next wall his bed is pushed up against and above his bed are some posters. I left a lot of room under the posters just in case he gets more or just wants to hang his own art work. Bryton chose orange as the door color, and I 100% regret painting the door frame as well haha. Oh! And we put glow in the dark stars all over his ceiling! As you probably notice, the very bottom of the walls are not painted... I may have just been a tad bit lazy. My parents are putting in baseboard soon so it should be covered. Here's a list of everything and how much it cost: Orange paint $10 Navy blue paint $10 Light blue paint $10 Chalkboard paint $10 Grey paint $0 (already had) Basketball hoop $1.50 Stars for ceiling $9 Desk $10 Stools $18 Hooks $3 Office supplies $10 Rug $20 Painting supplies -Trays $6 -Rollers $10 -Tape $2.50 -Brushes $4 Total cost was $134 I paid $104 of it and my mom helped with the last $30!

I've been at Mikes parents house since 10 am this morning doing laundry (it's 4:00pm right now) and one thing is for sure, Mike and I have WAY too much laundry! I have had lots of time to think though. I've been planning out our 2018 trips, our birthday celebrations, holiday events, and just our 2018 timeline in general. It's honestly super stressful, but also really fun! I'm so excited to see where next year takes us! I'm hoping to grow my photography business, finally start school, and make more friends. I'm also starting this daily goals thing. It's written out on graph paper and I fill in all of the squares with markers if I complete my goal for that day! I will have to take a picture and show you all. I was inspired by a photo I saw on Pinterest while searching Bullet Journals, so I am sure anyone can find it there. Starting today I am going to try to write in my journal everyday! I totally regret not documenting more in High School and I don't want to regret my lack of journal entries in a couple years.
I do this thing where I have a great idea, and then I start working on that idea, but then something goes wrong or becomes difficult and I instantly give up. What a HORRIBLE way to live a life, right?? I can't be like that anymore. I have to LIVE and be spontaneous and go for it every once in a while. So here's to a new beginning.... in the middle of October haha I just recorded my September Book Haul and will hopefully get it edited/uploaded in a few days!
I am so excited because this is my first book haul. I never had room in my old apartment to have tons of books, but in this apartment I have 2 whole bookshelves to fill up. In September I bought 40 or 42 books (I don't remember the exact amount)! I bought 1 from a grocery store but all the rest are from a thrift store. I'm a little crazy, I know, but it's been too long since I've read a book. I also keep telling myself that I have to buy books or else my bookshelves will look weird empty *evil witch cackle* |
