The “battle action” story Bungō Stray Dogs centers around a league of literary figures with supernatural powers. For example, in real life, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa wrote acclaimed stories that inspired Akira Kurosawa’s Rashōmon film and the Aoi Bungaku Series anime’s Jigoku Hen (Hell Screen) arc. In Bungō Stray Dogs, he has the power to transform and manipulate his cloak into a monster-like entity. Together, these writers solve mysteries as part of the “Armed Detective Agency.”

Ryō Hirata is handling prop design and sub character design, while Fumihiro Katagai (Chaika the Coffin Princess) is in charge of gun design. Taku Iwasaki (Gatchaman Crowds, Black Butler) is composing the music and Kazuhiro Wakabayashi (Ghost in the Shell, Blue Exorcist) is serving as sound director at Glovision.

okay, so I’ve finished all the chapters I can find of Bungou Stray Dogs and it’s kind of fucking amazing.

most (if not all) the main characters are named after famous poets and writers, and they have psychic abilities/superpowers that are all related to their respective most famous piece of literature (for example, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s blood forms a “Scarlet Letter” that administers painful justice on all those it touches.  Margaret Mitchell’s ability is “Gone With the Wind”, which I think removes all the air and water from a person’s body, turning them into a dessicated husk).  Edogawa Ranpo doesn’t actually have an ability, he’s just wicked smart, but he thinks that counts as a superpower and doesn’t know any better.  HP LOVECRAFT IS A FUCKING VILLAIN.  IT DOESN’T GET BETTER THAN THIS.

The main character is adorbs and turns into a fucking tiger??  like he’s just such a Good Boy and he has such an existential crisis over his own life and whether he’s allowed to live it.  Atsushi is bae.

Read it just for Dazai.  This fuck gets caught by the Mafia on purpose, then informs his torturer (old friend, ex-buddy who takes it really personal) that he sent the Mafia heads a letter the other day saying “if Dazai dies, all your ugly little secrets will be made public”, so if the guy kills Dazai, his superiors will kill him.  He confronts Dazai and yells “You got caught and forced me to make this impossible decision, what - just for spite?” and in response, he grins and goes, “Well, we haven’t seen each other in a while and I figured I’d get you a nice surprise.”  Later he’s seen wandering around the HQ yawning and muttering “Eh, I guess I’ll escape from the Mafia tomorrow” because he doesn’t want to have to do the paperwork when he gets home.

Everyone is pure gold and I love them.
